The Barnikel evening covered all of that and more but first ... we need to talk about David, David Barnikel. Founding member of the club who liked to have the Christmas 'do' in February when it was cheaper. It's in honour of David that we get together in February and and have an evening where we celebrate being a club and share some of the stuff we've been up to.

Lets start at the end ... a very interesting dispay of images from the Tyng Collection, the first six of which are still available, now and again, in a publication from the thirties that will set you back just under four thousand pounds. The pictures highlight the interesting split in photography, right from it's earliest days, between the pictorialists, who liked things a bit fuzzy and believed that photography should be about art (impressionistic), and the 'straight' practitioners that sought to emphasis that the camera was an art form in its own right and able to produce something more realistic. The photography world is still split along these lines and both sides are well represented within our llittle club. Both sides claim some of the same early photographers amongst their champions making everything as clear as mud ... but fun all the same.

Our very own pictorialists (The Impressions Group) kicked the evening off by strutting some of their stuff across the screen ... here's a link to their gallery on the club website ... https://www.bridportcameraclub.co.uk/gallery?lightbox=dataItem-lr92g0n7

Next up was Chris Mullett from the Analogue group ... still in it's early days (just like some of the cameras that Chris brought along) but keen for more members to have a go. Email us at info@bridportcameraclub.co.uk if you'd like to come along on a walkabout and play with some old cameras and some film.

A dozen or so members started the year with a 365 project ... a photo a day, every day for a year. It's a great way to push yourself out of your comfort zone and an even better way to get to know your camera and your own photographic habits inside out. Day one can be any time you like so let us know if you'd like to join in.

The Graham Herbert gave us a live demonstration of shooting a still life with glass, water and coloured lights ...

You can find more of Graham's work on his website ... https://www.herbertphotographics.com/

Here's a link to a previous plug for the night that shows a video cobbled together from the excellent eulogy provided by another founding member of the club, Colin Varndel.
